Symptom dictionary · 40 entries, A to Z

Find the words for what you're feeling

What women call it, what is worth writing down, and one sentence for your appointment. A reference for describing and recording, not for working out what is happening.

This is not a reason to wait Anything sudden, anything severe, anything that frightens you, and any bleeding you are worried about — contact a clinician rather than waiting for a date in the diary. Bring the record with you when you go.

Things women commonly bring to appointments during this transition. Nothing here says what is causing them. Not medical advice.

The recording method, in four lines

Turn “I have been tired” into a record

01Put a date on everything.

A note without a date is a feeling. This is the single change that makes the largest difference and it costs three seconds.

02Use the same scale every time.

Any scale works — nought to ten is fine. What matters is that a 4 in November means what a 4 meant in March. A scale that drifts tells you nothing.

03Leave gaps rather than guessing.

A blank week is honest and readable. A week of invented sixes is neither, and you will not remember which was which.

04Record onset, frequency, duration and what changes it.

Those four turn “I have been tired” into something that can be written into your notes.
